Do you know what gemstone is associated with your month of birth? Do you know that each of these gemstones is also assigned a symbolic meaning? While the concept of birthstones is largely founded on myths and legends, it’s undoubtedly romantic.
Therefore, it’s not surprising that people looking for unique presents for their loved ones often think of birthstone jewelry. Birthstones give a personalized touch to the jewelry, making the present itself more valuable.
Let’s take a closer look at what this is all about.
The Origin of Birthstones
We can trace the origins of the birthstone concept back to the biblical times. The Book of Exodus mentions that the priestly breastplate contained 12 jewels, each used to determine God’s will. The breastplates were worn by the High Priests of the Israelites, with Aron being the first High Priest, from whom all Jewish priestly families trace their paternal line.
Variations of the Concept
Back in the 8th and 9th century, Christians started wearing a different stone for each of the twelve months, as each stone became associated with one of the twelve apostles. Additionally, each stone was assigned a virtue pertaining to the apostle it was associated with.
It was centuries later that people started wearing just one birthstone depending on their month of birth. It was then that the idea of birthstones became a subject of interest for jewelry makers.
Modern Birthstones
In America, the first official attempt to make a standardized list of birthstones was made by Jewelers of America (then called the National Association of Jewelers) in 1912. After the initial standardization, the list was updated once again in 1952, and finalized in 2016, when the American Gem Trade Association and Jewelers of America collaboratively added spinel as an additional birthstone for August.
Take a look at the list of birthstones for each of the twelve months, as well as the meanings they are associated with in modern times:
