Historically, mixing metals in fashion has been a huge no-no. It was a societal sign of wealth to have matching metals in your jewelry pieces. This sign of rank started when an increase in demand from the same amount of supply from mines meant there was more competition in the supply chain. In order to meet demand, the metals were adapted and mixed into alloys. Jewelry pieces that were made of mixed metals were less pure, and therefore signified a lower wealth status. And for centuries this status stuck.
That is until recent trends have turned that around and mixing metals has continued to grow in popularity the last decade. TikTok has given fashion a huge platform, with “Get Ready With Me” videos being a top hit. The #GRWM feed is filled with influencers like Mary Skinner, who consistently has viral videos because of choices in jewelry. While the influencer has a classic style, many of her viral videos are ones in which she mentions mixing metals. Her comment sections are filled with users talking about how much they love that mixing metals is in trend.
Mixing metals seems like it comes naturally to influencers, but there are tips to follow to make it work. If you’re looking to incorporate the trend into your style here are some tips to master mixing metals.
- Layer your necklaces and stack your bracelets. This creates visual interest and would look more stylish than having one gold necklace and one silver bangle. Having multiple metals closer together looks more appealing to the eye than different metals farther apart.
- Mixing metals is a lot easier with single pieces that integrate multiple metals. Wearing a yellow gold and silver bangle can serve as a connection between two other pieces made of those metals.
- Try to have equilibrium in your pieces. Make sure that any metal you wear doesn’t significantly outweigh the other metal(s) you choose to wear.
