A change of season calls for a change of colors with October’s opal birthstone.
Opals, classified as precious gemstones and sedimentary stones, are formations of non-crystalline silica gel. Known mostly for their often brilliant color display, no two opals are alike due to a variable interplay in their internal structure.
Though the origin of the name “opal” is historically debatable, the Greeks word “opallos,” meaning “to see changes of color” is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word “upala” for precious stone. Opals, a beloved favorite in several cultures, were considered to bring exponentially good luck because they possessed all of the colors and therefore, all of the virtues, of other gemstones.
The ancient Roman author, Pliny the Elder, is credited for describing opals best when he said, “…for in them you shall see the living fire of the ruby, the glorious purple of the amethyst, the sea green of the emerald, all glittering together in an incredible mixture of light.
Regarded as one of the most delicate gemstones commonly worn, opals tend to require more attention and care than other stones. Prone to cracking if exposed to drastic temperature rises or drops, opals are often compared to glass as far as durability and hardness.
From vintage opal rings to opal Pandora® charms, our San Diego Leo Hamel showroom has a variety of opals in different styles and colors fit for all October birthday personalities. Bring good luck to your loved one and considering gifting them with a genuine and prized opal gemstone, formed with the fire of a ruby, the glory of an amethyst and brightness of an emerald!
