How to Match Your Earrings to Your Outfit

Published Date:April 27, 2017

For some people, the skill of matching colors and styles comes naturally. Others need a bit of help, and that’s where this text comes in. It offers some basic guidelines on how to choose suitable earrings to go with your current outfit. Of course, different sets require different outfits, and wearing the same set of earrings in all of those situations isn’t exactly acceptable.

If you are looking to expand your earrings collection, this text may be able to help you choose the right styles and brands. Luckily, designer jewelry like Tiffany & Co. earrings can be found in many varieties, from studs to dangles and hoops.

Colors

Colors can make or break an outfit. Just as you have to be sure you have the complementary colors when choosing your clothes, the same rule applies to earrings. If you go for subtle tones in your outfit, a screaming neon pink pair of hoop earrings isn’t going to look good. Your best bet is to have earrings match the colors of your outfit.

Contrast

Another great advice when picking out earrings is having them completely contrast your outfit. However, there are rules to this, you can’t just randomly select a pair and go with it. Just as a complementary colors need to be carefully selected, so do the contrasting ones. So black pairs with white, while blue pairs with red or orange to create contrast. The contrast will bring out the intensity of colors.

Other accessories

If you are wearing more than one accessory, it is always a good idea to make sure that their style matches. For instance, Tiffany earrings probably pair best with Tiffany necklaces or other jewelry form the same line. Similarly, scarves, sunglasses and other accessories have their own distinctive style. Your earrings should not clash with it.

Ask a friend

If you have this option, you should always get an opinion of a friend whose taste you trust. They will have the additional benefit of knowing you and what looks good on you, including how to pick out earrings to match your face.

Look in the mirror

Ultimately, you should ask the most important person – yourself – for opinion. You should know yourself best. Even though there are some rules and guidelines, it is finally up to you what you feel comfortable with and prefer.

Situations

When talking about various styles and situations, it is clear that not all earring types are suitable for all situations. If you are out for a morning jog, or any kind of physical activity, your earrings should probably not dangle, so simple studs are preferred.

Similarly, in school or at the workplace your outfit, and accordingly, your earrings should be subtle, so some lever backs or wire hooks seem like the ideal pairing. On the other hand, if you are going clubbing or to a party, you have the full freedom to pick any pair you feel comfortable with, although the urban outfits pair fairly well with hoop earrings.

Finally, formal events such as weddings require a bit more elegant look. Women will often wear long dresses and an assortment of jewelry. For these kinds of events and outfits, the most suitable earrings are drops or chandeliers.
